MetTel complaint by Czm30
March 10, 2008. Stay away from MetTel. My former phone company, CTI, was sold to MetTel. With CTI, I had "free" local and regional calls, and paid only for long distance calls. I used this phone line exclusively for my dial-up internet connection which calls a local number to connect to the internet. My average monthly phone bill came out to about $23 to $24. (I have years worth of CTI bills to prove this.)

Once MetTel took over my telephone service, my usual $24/month bill skyrocketed to $173.88. (For the same exact service, all local calls.) "There must be some mistake," I said to myself. I called MetTel to correct the error and spoke to Steve in customer service. It was difficult to hear him speak because of all the noise in the background. Over all the background noise, he proceeded to tell me that many other customers had called to complain about this also happening to them. "Ok, so I'm not the only one," I thought to myself. But to my utter surprise he told me that there was nothing they can do about the new charges. I then asked to speak to a supervisor and was told his supervisor would not tell me anything different. I was shocked speechless.

A company should not be able to arbitrarily make up new rules and begin charging you at a different rate than you had originally agreed to with the purchased company. And of course the rate they chose to charge was the one that would garner them to maximum amount. That's sneaky and irresponsible business. What they should have done was to notify their customers that their rates will change with MetTel's purchase of CTI/Starvox. But the only letter I got from MetTel was the announcement that MetTel was buying CTI/Starvox and CTI/Starvox customers should expect the "same great service." A complete lie if there ever was one.

I immediately changed to a new phone service carrier that will give me free local calls for about $30. But now I'm stuck with a bogus MetTel one-moth bill for March 2008 for $173.88 when just the previous 7-1/2 years with CTI I paid about $24/month. MetTel is a shady company. I’m also writing a letter of dissatisfaction to MetTel 44 Wall Street, 6th floor, New York, New York 10005. If any of you have a suggestion on how else to dispute this bogus bill please contact me.

I work in the telecommunications field and have worked with CTI for the last 5 years. Met-Tel did not buy CTI / Starvox. They purchased lines from Verizon / the incumbent due to CTI / Starvox not making payments for leasing facilities. As of Friday, March 24th, CTI / Starvox was forced to close their doors. There is no more CTI / Starvox.
